Question 3: In the video clip, you hear educators talking about using different strategies to teach mathematics. In the classroom, the teacher wants his fifth-graders to find the average height of fifth-graders. He first has students estimate the average height and then has small groups of students use problem solving to find the average height of the group. What steps has he taken to ensure that all students are engaged in this task? What does he do to keep the students on-task?

The teacher took time to assign each student a task while working in the groups, in order to prevent any student from feeling left out or not contributing. He assigned students jobs such as time keeper, this student was responsible for keeping his/her group on task. When students have a certain job while working with others, it keeps them focused and feeling as though they are contributing to the project. The teacher is consistently walking around and checking in on the groups to make sure all the groups are working and understanding the project. I loved how he took the students through a process of learning and connected it to their lives today. Students work and learn better when they feel what they are learning has meaning and purpose.
